Meet Marlyn Carrillo

Marlyn Carrillo is a first-gen fronteriza from El Paso, TX with extensive experience in public affairs and digital media strategy. She began her career as a journalist covering El Paso, Ciudad Juarez, and Las Cruces, NM via Telemundo El Paso and KRUX 91.5 FM. Marlyn founded a women's art collective with members in over 20 cities and is deeply invested in civil engagement, actively participating in women's and immigration advocacy groups. She currently serves as the Marketing Director at Athenian Group, handling branding, digital marketing, and community engagement. She was recently reappointed to serve on the City of San Diego Commission on the Status of Women by Mayor Todd Gloria.

In her role at Athenian Group, Marlyn is responsible for amplifying and maintaining the company's brand identity, developing and executing digital marketing strategies, and fostering strong relationships within the geographical areas they serve. Her efforts ensure that Athenian Group's message is effectively communicated across various platforms and that the firm remains engaged with its diverse client base.

Before joining Athenian Group, Marlyn managed communication platforms and media strategy as Communications Director for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. She also served as Press Secretary for the U.S. House of Representatives, where she led digital strategy, including website and social media platforms, and directed monthly podcasts, webinars, and virtual events. Additionally, she produced office branding, weekly newsletters, COVID-19 resource packages, press releases, statements, English-Spanish translations, and talking points.

Marlyn's commitment to building quality public services for immigrant and female-identifying communities led her to help create the Latinx Membership Specialist role for Girl Scouts. In this role, she built strong relationships within diverse and underrepresented communities, reflected in hundreds of new volunteers and community partners she trained and recruited. Her work had a national impact, with a curriculum on Latinx community engagement and digital strategy reaching over 100 Girl Scout USA councils.

She also spearheaded the creation of national initiatives on social media, training curriculum, and development for GSUSA staff and volunteers, helping to bridge the gap between virtual and on-the-ground recruiting.
